South Carolina agents are investigating after an inmate who had been at the York County jail on a pending murder charge died Tuesday at a hospital.

The 48-year-old man had been in the York County jail since Oct. 18 on Williamsburg County charges of murder, armed robbery, burglary and conspiracy, York County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Trent Faris said.

York County had custody of the man as a courtesy to the sheriff in Williamsburg, Faris said.

The man’s name and details of the murder case from rural Williamsburg located west of Myrtle Beach have not been released.

The inmate told jail officials Saturday night he was not feeling well, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Jail medical staff decided the man needed advanced care, so he was taken to an area hospital, according to the statement.

York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson asked the State Law Enforcement Division to do an independent investigation of the death. The York County jail is located at the Moss Justice Center in York and is administered by the sheriff. It has a maximum capacity of 565. More than 440 inmates were jailed there this week, records show.

Four people in-custody at York County jails have died in 2024. Two other inmates at the county jail died in September and February. One person died in March while at the Rock Hill city jail.
