A man has died after what appears to be a fatal hit and run crash in Rock Hill Sunday night, police said.

Officers found the 44-year-old in the street on Celanese Road near Interstate 77 before 6:45 p.m., the Rock Hill Police Department said in a statement. The man died later at Piedmont Medical Center hospital, police said. He has not been identified.

It is believed the man who died was a pedestrian, Lt. Michael Chavis said Monday.

“All indications are he was struck while on foot,” Chavis said.

The department’s Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction team continues to investigate.

Celanese Road near I-77 is one of York County’s busiest streets with more than 47,000 vehicles per day on average, according to S.C. Department of Transportation statistics.
