SC man arrested after motorcyclist killed in Rock Hill hit-and-run, officials say

A South Carolina man has been arrested after fleeing a fatal hit and run crash that left a Rock Hill motorcyclist dead, officials said.

Marshall Hart, 42, is charged with leaving the scene where death results, driving under suspension, and operating an uninsured vehicle, according to a statement from the Rock Hill Police Department.

Leroy Canty, 41, died at the scene of the collision on Crawford Road near Poag Street on Saturday night around 9 p.m., York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said.

The Mercedes Hart was driving allegedly hit the Suzuki motorcycle Canty was riding before Hart left the scene on foot, police said in a statement.

The area of the crash is at the city’s edge, south of Heckle Boulevard. K-9 and other police units responded before officers found Hart later north of the crash site on Frank Street, police said.

Leaving the scene of a collision involving death carries one to 25 years in prison for a conviction under South Carolina law. Hart remains in the York County jail under $75,000 bail, records show.

The fatal crash was the fifth in York County in the past month.
