SC state police investigating after man dies in York County jail, sheriff says
A man who had been in custody for almost two months died Wednesday evening at the York County jail, officials said.
The man, 45, has not been identified after being found unresponsive in his cell after a “medical emergency,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
He had been in custody pending court dates for failure to appear on drug charges, the statement said.
Sheriff Tony Breeden notified the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate. The sheriff’s office asks SLED to investigate all in-custody deaths, sheriff’s office spokesman Trent Faris said.
The 565-inmate capacity county jail at the Moss Justice Center in York is run by the sheriff. There were 485 people in custody as of Thursday morning.
The death is the second in the jail in 2025. A woman who had been in custody died at a hospital in February.
