SC man gets 25 years for drunk driving where Rock Hill mom, unborn baby died

A South Carolina man who was driving drunk at more than three times the legal limit when he killed a pregnant Rock Hill mother and her unborn son has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Charles Sidney Jones III, 45, pleaded guilty Thursday in Chester County criminal court, 6th Circuit Solicitor Randy Newman said. She was six months pregnant when she died in the 2023 collision. Jones had prior DUI convictions.

Jones’ blood alcohol at the time of the crash was .277, which is more than three times the legal limit, Newman said. The legal limit in South Carolina is .08.

Jones pleaded guilty to DUI causing death, causing the death of a child in utero during commission of a violent crime, and DUI causing great bodily injury, Newman said.

Judge Robert Hood sentenced Jones.

The October 2023 crash happened on Saluda Road near the York/Chester county line.
