An inmate who had been in custody at the York County jail for the past 10 months has died after a “medical emergency,” the York County Sheriff’s Office said.

The 41-year-old man collapsed Saturday afternoon before 5 p.m. in the shower area of the jail, sheriff officials said in a written statement. The man died at a hospital later that Saturday, officials said.

The man has not been identified by the York County Coroner’s Office. He had been in jail since January on charges of trafficking fentanyl, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, marijuana possession, and, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to the sheriff.

The sheriff’s office notified the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate the death. The 565-inmate capacity county jail located at the Moss Justice Center in York is run by the sheriff. There were 487 people in custody as of Sunday evening.

The inmate death is the third this year in York County.
