Deputies are investigating after a 74-year-old Charlotte man was found shot to death Monday in South Carolina behind a business in Indian Land.

He was identified Tuesday as Gary Herendeen, said Karla Knight-Deese, the Lancaster County Coroner.

He was found around noon behind The Designers Marketplace on Yarborough Road, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

Citing the ongoing homicide investigation, neither the coroner nor deputies have said how many times Herendeen was shot or how long he had been deceased.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Doug Barfield said Tuesday that no arrests have been made.

The man worked at the business, deputies said. The business was closed over the past weekend, then the body was found Monday by a person who drove into the back parking lot to visit the business, according to officials.

Even though the investigation remains ongoing and little information has been released, Sheriff Barry Faile said deputies “do not believe there is any ongoing danger to the residents or businesses in the area.”

The area is one of the fastest growing parts of the Rock Hill and Charlotte region. It is east of Fort Mill off S.C. 160 and west of U.S. 521, and south of Ballantyne.
