Rock Hill, South Carolina police said possible human remains were found in a building on May 19, 2026, officials said.

Rock Hill police are investigating after bones that are “possible human remains” were found Tuesday in the crawl space of a building being renovated near downtown.

Contractors working on the business building in the 300 block of Oakland Avenue contacted police after the discovery, according to a statement from the Rock Hill Police Department.

It is unclear how long the bones had been there. The remains were skeletal, police spokesman Lt. Michael Chavis said.

The bones have to be examined by a forensic anthropologist to determine how old they are and if they are human, Chavis said. It is unknown how long that will take.
