A South Carolina police officer is on unpaid leave and charged with felony domestic violence after threatening her boyfriend with a gun, officials said.

Mara Lynn Anderton, 44, a Clover Police Department patrol officer, faces charges of domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and resisting arrest after an incident in Chester County Thursday afternoon.

She has been a patrol officer with the Clover police in York County since 2024, said Sgt. Tracy Reid, a spokesman for the department. Clover Police Chief Randy Grice put Anderson on administrative leave after her arrest.

“The Clover police department holds all officers to a high standard and incidents like this will not be tolerated,” Grice said.

Clover police also started an internal investigation that could be finished as early as Friday, Grice told The Herald.

Clover is a town of around 8,000 people northwest of Rock Hill and southwest of Charlotte. It has its own police force of 30-plus officers.

The incident happened 30 miles south of Clover around 5:30 p.m. outside Chester, a small city of around 5,000 people south of Rock Hill.

Further details were not released. The Chester County sheriff is handling the case.

Anderton remained in the Chester County jail Friday morning pending an initial bail hearing in court.
