Rock Hill man with car break-in history now charged with killing after break-in
Rock Hill police have arrested a man with past convictions for car break-ins on new allegations that he killed a man after breaking into the victim’s car last week, according to police and court records.
Jakelvin Zyqualyn Conner, 24, is being held without bail at the York County jail on charges of murder, two counts of breaking and entering into vehicles, and two weapons charges, records show.
Lebyron Cathcart, 39, died in a yard near his Amelia Avenue home Thursday morning before 5 a.m. Cathcart went outside when he saw someone breaking into his car, police said. He gave chase, then shots were fired. Cathcart was killed.
Police now say Conner broke into the cars and fired the shots. The investigation showed Conner broke into two vehicles at Cathcart’s home, Rock Hill police Lt. Michael Chavis said. One vehicle belonged to Cathcart and the other was Cathcart’s girlfriend’s car, Chavis said.
Conner has past convictions for car break-ins from 2024 and 2021, York County online court records show.
Cathcart leaves behind three children, according to a GoFundMe set up to pay for funeral costs. On the fundraising site, Cathcart is described as “a loving and kindhearted person and always helping others in need.”
