New South Carolina school test scores put Fort Mill at the head of the class again. But Clover and Lancaster County schools received plenty of high marks, too.

On Tuesday, the South Carolina Department of Education released scores from its SC READY testing this spring. Students in grades 3 through 8 tested in math and English language arts. Grades 4 and 6 also had science testing.

A Herald review of scores statewide found the Fort Mill School District outperformed all of the 75 traditional or charter school districts in all six grades for English and both grades for science. Fort Mill also had the top math scores in grades 4, 7 and 8. Fort Mill never finished lower than No. 5 (fifth-grade math).

Fort Mill has ranked atop the state in several of those school test scores in the past few years, too.

“These scores are worth celebrating,” first-year Fort Mill school Superintendent Grey Young said in a message from the district Tuesday. “But they’re also a reminder that our job is to keep reaching higher, making sure every child has the chance to succeed.”

The Clover School District scored highest in the state in sixth-grade math. Clover, at No. 3 in the state, also finished ahead of Fort Mill in fifth-grade math. Clover finished in the top five statewide in every grade for math, three out of six grades tested for English and both grades for science.

While those results for Fort Mill and Clover track closely to recent years’ rankings, another Rock Hill region district fared better than it had in the past.

The Lancaster County School District ranked No. 6 in both third-grade and fifth-grade math. Lancaster County ranked No. 7 in both fourth- and sixth-grade math.

None of the six Rock Hill region school districts finished in the bottom 10 of any score, except the Chester County School District. That only happened once, in eighth-grade math where Chester County tied for the 10th lowest mark with Cherokee County.
