A sweet but anxious pup out of northwest Texas is on the lookout for a patient and understanding home that will allow her to heal her emotional scars on her own terms.

Nova is a special dog, who managed to live a hard life at only a year old, and she’s ready to start a new, and happy, chapter in her life, the South Plains Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Lubbock said.

“Nova is a once in a lifetime girl. She is a pitbull terrier born approximately 9/15/2023,” the shelter said in a Jan. 16 Facebook post.

“We’re not 100% sure what Nova went through before coming to us, but we know it wasn’t the life she deserved. She came to us with enough scars you’d think she lived through a lifetime of war at under a year old. Our girl is healing, but she has a long road to go.”

Because of her past, Nova is very reserved with who she will let into her life — and it can’t be just anyone.

“Nova is forgiving but timid and needs time to know you’re her friend, she often walks around with her tail tucked, head low, and a cute army crawl,” the shelter said. “In the months we’ve had Nova she’s opened up to children, cats and dogs. She spends most of her day playing in the back yard with her foster siblings, or making her way to her kennel with a quick pit stop on our bed.”

Due to her timid nature, the shelter will only allow “private only” visits to make sure Nova knows she’s safe when meeting a potential new family.

“She loves to give kisses, nibble you when she wants attention, or paw you until she gets the love she needs,” the shelter said.

Nova was available for adoption as of Jan 16, according to the shelter. For more information on Nova and other adoptable pets, visit the South Plains SPCA’s website.
