Glowing lava forms message of love at Hawaii volcano. See the incredible photo
A volcano in Hawaii that’s been erupting since December displayed a message of love in glowing lava a little more than a week before Valentine’s Day, a photo shows.
A webcam image shows a heart-shaped formation of lava on Kilauea.
The image from the U.S. Geological Survey, or USGS, was captured at 7:50 p.m. Feb. 4 and shared the next morning on Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park’s Facebook page.
Kilauea, on the island of Hawaii, started erupting Dec. 23. It’s continued spewing lava in cycles since then, with the eighth episode starting the evening of Feb. 3 and stopping not long before the webcam image was captured, national park officials said.
The episodes have lasted anywhere from 13 hours to eight days, and pauses between them have lasted less than 24 hours to 12 days, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.
The eruption that started Dec. 23 is Kilauea’s eighth since 2020, McClatchy News previously reported. As the activity draws visitors to Kilauea, officials warn that they should be mindful of hazards such as Pele’s hair, or strands of volcanic glass.
