Texas police say a father ran away from the scene of a 100-mph crash, abandoning his injured wife and kids. Houston Police Department.

A Texas man crashed at 100 mph then ran away from the scene, leaving his injured family behind, police told news outlets.

Houston police say the father was driving with his wife and four children inside on the night of Tuesday, March 25, when his SUV collided with a pickup truck that cut him off by trying to make a right turn from an inside lane, KTRK reported.

The SUV went into the air and slammed into a drainage ditch, police told KPRC.

Investigators believe the SUV was going about 100 miles per hour when the crash happened, the station reported, adding that the speed limit was 35.

The “major crash” happened near the 5300 block of Yale Street, on Houston’s north side, according to police.

An 8-year-old child, the oldest of four, was thrown from the vehicle, KRIV reported. Police said the other three children are toddlers.

Their father ran away from the wreckage and was picked up by another vehicle, police told the station.

Nobody in the pickup truck was hurt, but the SUV driver’s family is hospitalized, with three in critical condition and two in serious condition, but all considered stable, the station reported.

Now, investigators are trying to find the father, KTRK reported.

“I have no idea what’s going through his mind at the time. I don’t know if there was some other reason that he felt he needed to flee,” Capt. Ryan Watson said, the outlet reported. “The investigators here are following down leads and they are going to track that down and see if they can talk to him and get some answers, find out what’s going on.”
