A man was shot and killed at a cemetery when a fight broke out during a funeral service for another man, Virginia police said.

Officers responded to the shooting after 2:40 p.m. April 16 at Oakwood Cemetery, where a man was shot more than once during an argument, Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards told WWBT.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died, according to the outlet.

“This is a sad day because this family was burying someone who passed away — it wasn’t a violent death — but it was still going through this grieving process that escalated into now another family is going to have to plan a funeral,” Edwards told WTVR.

Robert Jennings, who identified himself to WRIC as the grandfather of the man who was being buried, said he ducked behind a car when he heard the gunshots.

“I’m burying my grandchild and you guys bring violence to the funeral?!” he told the outlet.

Police have not identified the victim or any suspects. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is being asked to call the Richmond Police Department at 804-646-3613.
