A 15-year-old boy became enraged at the idea of losing his laptop as “punishment” and stabbed his grandmother more than 35 times, killing her, authorities in Long Island, New York, say.

He also attacked his mother with the knife the evening of April 7, according to an April 17 news release by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. She survived the stabbing.

The teen, of Selden, has been indicted on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder, the district attorney’s office says.

“This is an exceptionally tragic case that has devastated a family,” District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said in a statement.

The boy’s defense attorney, Peter Mayer, didn’t immediately return McClatchy News’ request for comment April 17.

What led to the stabbing?

The incident started with the teen arguing with his mom, who confronted him over classes he missed at school, officials say.

The boy’s grandmother was there and told her daughter to confiscate his laptop as a consequence, according to the district attorney’s office.

The suggestion “allegedly infuriated” the boy, the office says.

The teen retrieved a knife and began stabbing his grandmother, then stabbed his mother, according to authorities.

After his mother fell and “played dead,” he went back to his grandmother and stabbed her to death, officials say.

The mother was hospitalized with “serious” injuries and “is still recovering,” the office says.

She was stabbed in the face, neck, on her arm and on her back, WNYW reported.

The woman’s son left their home following the stabbing, then police located and apprehended him in Selden before 11:30 that night, according to the TV station.

What’s next?

The boy was arraigned on murder charges on April 16, according to officials.

With the case pending, a judge ordered the boy to be detained, officials say. If he’s convicted of murder, he’d face 15 years to life in prison.

The boy is scheduled to return to court on May 21, according to the district attorney’s office.

“When a child allegedly turns violent against their own family members, it creates layers of trauma that extend far beyond physical injuries,” Tierney said. “Our office will pursue justice for the victims of these horrific acts.”

Selden is a Long Island hamlet in the town of Brookhaven.
