Cemetery worker steals $114K from families planning funerals, Illinois cops say
A worker helping mourning families plan funerals at an Illinois cemetery pocketed portions of their payments meant to go to her employer, Illinois authorities said.
Latrecia Marshall-Parris was reported by another staff member at a Glenwood cemetery in 2023 and accused of collecting money from a family purchasing a headstone but not depositing the full amount to her employer, Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart said in an April 19 news release.
The 48-year-old instead pocketed a portion of the family’s payment, police said.
From April 2022 to August 2023, the worker stole a portion of payments to the cemetery 49 times, police said. In total, she took over $114,200, authorities said.
Marshall-Parris was arrested on April 16 in Harvey and turned over to Cook County sheriff’s police, officials said.
She was charged with two counts of continuing a financial crime enterprise, felony theft and theft deception/intent, police said.
She appeared in court on April 18 and was released from custody, according to the sheriff’s office. Her case is pending trial.
Glenwood is in the Chicago area and about a 30-mile drive south from downtown.
