Friends swim to shore after canoe flips in NH, then realize one didn’t make it
A teen boy died after the canoe he was in flipped, sending him and his friends into a dark lake in New Hampshire, officials said.
Authorities responded to a call for help at about 12:10 a.m. on Sunday, April 27, at Governors Lake in Raymond, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Law Enforcement Division said in a Facebook post.
A group of four friends had been canoeing shortly before midnight when the boat overturned, authorities said.
Three people swam to the shoreline and realized their friend, a 15-year-old boy from Raymond, hadn’t made it, officials said.
Search teams spread out to find him, and his body was discovered at about 8 a.m. that morning, officials said.
He was about 60 feet from the shoreline and was in about 9 feet of water.
Authorities are now reminding boaters to always use a personal flotation device.
Raymond is in southeastern New Hampshire.
