A massive sea creature was spotted off the coast of California and onlookers are calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

A sperm whale was seen in the “rare” June 8 sighting that went down as “one for the books,” according to a Facebook post by Dana Wharf Whale Watch.

They are mainly gray with bits of white patches on their underside and have extremely big heads which make up one-third of their entire body length, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

They hunt for their food in depths as deep as 2,000 feet and usually eat about 3% of their body weight everyday, NOAA said.

The sperm whale, known as the “world’s largest toothed predators,” can be seen in the Dana Point video coming up for air before diving back into the ocean.

Sperm whales are “elusive deep-divers” so they aren’t seen off the coast very often, making for an “extraordinary moment,” the group said.

Dana Point is about a 60-mile drive southeast from downtown Los Angeles.
