The York County Council voted unanimously on Monday to retain its chairperson for another term.

Christi Cox, whose District 5 covers southern portions of Rock Hill and Fort Mill, will continue setting meeting agendas for at least two more years. In 2021 she became the first woman elected as council chair — a position that council members select among themselves. It has limited responsibilities above fellow council members.

Under her leadership last year, the council adopted a strategic plan for the county that she said she hopes to continue building upon. Part of that work will include collaboration with other governmental agencies like school districts and municipalities this year.

“Without a clear goal, without clear direction, folks become unfocused, unmotivated,” said Cox, who joined the county council in 2015. “We have a unique identity, a rich history. We must work vigilantly to protect our identity, learn from the good and the bad, embrace responsible growth without losing our identity and, most importantly, to work for unity.”

District 1’s Tom Audette will serve as vice chair, meaning he will assist in setting agendas and lead meetings in Cox’s absence. He represents Tega Cay and the western part of Fort Mill.

“I’m excited about 2025. I think that we’re gonna have a great year bringing back some incredible things to the people of York County,” Audette said.

Audette joined the county council in 2020 after serving two terms on the Fort Mill School District Board of Trustees.

Audette assumed the vice chair position vacated by District 2’s Allison Love, who lost her seat representing Clover and Lake Wylie to Republican primary challenger Andy Litten. Love is the only council member who did not return this year.
