Thanksgiving dispute turns fatal when mom kills daughter at Charlotte home, cops say

Charlotte’s mounting 2019 homicide tally grew on Thanksgiving, when the year’s 101st killing was reported during a family dispute on the city’s east side.

The victim was identified by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police as 37-year-old Chante Lavarche Alexander.

Her mother, 56-year-old Elvira Elizabeth Alexander, is charged with second-degree murder and possession of a stolen fire arm, CMPD said in a release.

Investigators have not said what prompted the violence, which was reported around 9:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of Krupa Court. That’s east of the intersection of Shamrock Drive and The Plaza.

“Patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service. Upon arrival, officers located a female in an apartment complex with a gunshot wound,” a release said.

“The victim was transported to the hospital and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff...Responding officers detained a person of interest at the residence.”

Investigators believe the Krupa Court shooting was “domestic related,” a release said.

“Homicide Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident,” officials said.

The killing was one of two shootings reported in the city on Thanksgiving. The other involved an unidentified male who is hospitalized with “a life threatening” wound after being shot around 5 p.m. in the 1700 block of Pierson Drive, police said. That is in east Charlotte, near the intersection of Independence Boulevard and N. Sharon Amity Road.

One-third of this year’s homicide victims knew their killer, according to CMPD police data. Most of the 2019 killings were spread out in an east-to-west arch over uptown, the Charlotte Observer reported last week.

CMPD data reports 80% of Charlotte’s 2019 homicide victims died by gunfire. Others were stabbed, beaten or hit by a vehicle.

At least 30 homicides occurred during arguments and 13 more were killed in a drug-related incident. Twelve were killed during a domestic dispute, data show.
