A child headed to school suffered critical injuries when struck by a passing pickup, according to investigators in North Carolina.

The collision happened around 6:45 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, along the 3100 block of Triangle Lake Road in High Point, police said in a news release.

As of Dec. 17, the child remained hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

“Officers located an 8-year-old child who was struck by a small pickup truck while on the roadway. The child was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, and is currently in stable condition,” police said.

“A Guilford County Schools bus was in the vicinity and was slowing down to pick up children, but the bus was not directly involved in the accident.”

An investigation has determined charges are not justified, police said. The school bus was on the other side of the road from the pickup, and had not yet stopped, officials said.

“The truck driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Speed was not a factor in this crash,” police said.

Triangle Lake Road is two-lanes through a residential neighborhood, with a speed limit of 35 mph, maps show.

High Point is about a 76-mile drive northeast from uptown Charlotte.
