A gunfight erupted in the middle of the night when police responded to reports of a man banging on someone’s window, according to police in North Carolina.

The “domestic disturbance” happened around 12:40 a.m. Thursday in Greensboro, and ended with the suspect shot by police, the Greensboro Police Department said in a Feb. 26 news release.

The man was identified as Raevon Milton, 26, and he died of his injuries on April 2, the department reports.

“A caller reported a man was attempting to break in and was banging on a window,” police said.

“When officers arrived and made contact with the suspect in the parking lot, the suspect fired multiple shots at police before he fled in a vehicle. The suspect led officers on a brief pursuit before returning to the original scene, firing additional shots at officers before his vehicle stopped in the parking lot. As the suspect exited the vehicle, he continued to fire shots at officers.”

Police returned fire, striking the man. No officers were hit, officials said.

“Officers immediately began rendering aid, and requested EMS to transport the individual to a local hospital for treatment,” police said.

Warrants for Milton charged him with more than a half dozen offenses, including seven felony counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and three felony counts of breaking and entering to terrorize, police say.

The department’s Professional Standards Division will investigate the shooting to determine if policies were followed. The officers involved “have been placed on administrative duty,” which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

Greensboro is about a 90-mile drive northeast from uptown Charlotte.
