Witnesses rush to start CPR after 5 kids found passed out in vehicle, SC cops say
Five children were found passed out in a South Carolina parking lot and taken to a hospital, officials said.
The kids were in a Kia when they were discovered unresponsive early Thursday, June 2, according to the North Charleston Police Department.
A woman told police she had picked some of the kids up from school before she went inside a Chinese takeout restaurant to get them food. When she came out five minutes later, she saw that one of the children wasn’t responsive, officials said.
That’s when several witnesses reported hearing the woman scream. One of them used a tool to break the back window of the vehicle, where four other children were seen unresponsive.
At about 11:30 a.m., officers arrived to the scene, a shopping center on McMillan Avenue. That’s where they reportedly helped witnesses do CPR on the children who had been carried inside.
The kids received emergency treatment before first responders arrived, officials said in a statement. The children later were listed in “stable condition.”
“Investigators seized the vehicle and with the help of the North Charleston Fire Department tests were run on the vehicle and found that after only five minutes of the vehicle running dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen cyanide were present inside the vehicle,” the statement said. “The investigation continues but at this time it appears this was a vehicle malfunction that caused the juveniles sickness.”
