A 4-year-old died after a fall from a fourth-floor window in South Carolina, officials said.

The child was at an apartment complex when tragedy struck on Saturday, July 16, according to the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

Officers said they were called at about 10 a.m. after the “child leaned on the screen of an open window and fell to the ground.”

The 4-year-old was rushed to a hospital and later died, officials said.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that the incident was accidental,” the police department wrote July 18 in a news release.

The fall was reported at the Oyster Park Apartments in Mount Pleasant, outside of Charleston.

“Our hearts go out to the child’s family after this tragic incident,” officers wrote in their release. “Our department will be available to assist the family during this difficult time.”
