Driver killed when SUV runs off road and crashes into tree, SC Highway Patrol says

One person was killed Saturday night when an SUV ran off a Midlands road and crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 10 p.m. in Calhoun County, Lance Cpl. Nick Pye said Sunday.

A 2023 Hyundai SUV was driving west on S.C. 6 when it ran off the left side of the road near the intersection with Bridalwreath Drive, according to Pye. That’s near Exit 136 on Interstate 26.

The SUV then crashed into a tree and the driver was killed, Pye said.

The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through April 16, at least 257 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least three people have died in Calhoun County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, four deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
