Columbia employee killed in crash between city vehicles is identified by police
A fatal crash involving two City of Columbia Public Works vehicles left one person dead and another injured Friday, according to Columbia officials.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office said that 27-year-old Columbia resident Bernard Brooks-Summers died at the scene of the collision, according to a Monday news release from the Columbia Police Department.
The crash happened at the intersection of Farrow Road and Craven Street in the Eau Claire neighborhood in the northern part of Columbia around 2:45 p.m. Friday, city officials said. That’s in the area between North Main Street and S.C. 277.
The injured driver was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to city officials. Further information on his condition was not available, but Monday, police said the surviving crash victim is continuing to receive medical attention.
No other injuries were reported.
The city did not share the nature of the crash and did not say what kind of vehicles were involved. Information about what led to the crash was not available, but it continues to be investigated by police.
Columbia officials told police that Brooks-Summers was a city employee since November 2023, and was assigned as a maintenance assistant for the yard trash collection operation.
“The City of Columbia is deeply saddened by the loss of one our beloved city employees,” City Manager Teresa Wilson said. “Our prayers and condolences go out to the families, friends and co-workers affected by this tragic event.”
