Driver dies following crash between car and SUV on Richland County road, SC cops say
One person died the day after an SUV and car were involved in a crash on a Richland County road, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
The collision happened Sunday at the intersection of U.S. 76/Garners Ferry Road and Congaree Road, said Master Trooper William Bennett. That’s in the Hopkins area, near McEntire Joint National Guard Base.
At about 4:50 p.m. Sunday, a 2016 Toyota SUV was driving east on Garners Ferry Road, according to Bennett. At the same time, a 2012 Honda sedan was heading north on Congaree Road, and as it turned left onto Garners Ferry Road the vehicles collided, Bennett said.
The Honda driver was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia, and died Monday, according to Bennett.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Honda driver.
Bennett said the Toyota driver was not hurt, and the drivers were the only people in the respective vehicles. No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing a seat belt, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 629 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 35 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 61 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
