Two people riding in minivan killed in head-on crash on South Carolina road, cops say

Two people were killed Saturday when a car crashed into a minivan, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at about 5:30 p.m. in McCormick County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller.

A 2015 Ford Mustang was driving north on U.S. 221, according to Miller. Near the intersection with Oak Hill Drive the car crossed left of the center line and hit a 2008 Chrysler minivan that was driving south on U.S. 221, Miller said.

There were six people in the minivan, and two of the passengers died in the head-on collision, according to Miller.

The McCormick County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the passengers who died.

Miller said the Mustang driver, who was the only person in the car, was injured in the wreck. Further information on the Mustang driver’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported by the Highway Patrol.

There was no word if anyone involved in the collision was wearing a seat belt or safety restraint.

Information about what caused the Mustang to veer into oncoming traffic was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sept. 15, at least 629 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least four people have died in McCormick County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
