South Carolina woman killed in crash that left another driver hospitalized, officials say

A Lexington woman was killed and another person was injured Tuesday in a crash on a Lexington County road, according to South Carolina officials.

Nita Lynn Regino, a 52-year-old Lexington resident, died in what Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher called an accident.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Longview Street and Boiling Springs Road, said Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s in a part of Lexington between Platt Springs Road and South Lake Drive.

Regino was driving a 2019 Chevrolet sedan north on Longview Street, and as she turned west onto Boiling Springs Road her car was hit by a 2009 Chevrolet pickup truck that was driving west on Boiling Springs Road, officials said.

As a result of the collision the pickup ran off the left side of the road and into a ditch, while the car veered off the right side of the road, Bennett said. The car also crashed into a ditch, and Regino died at the scene, according to Bennett.

The pickup driver was hurt and taken to Lexington Medical Center, Bennett said. Further information on the pickup driver’s condition was not available.

Bennett said the drivers were the only people in their respective vehicles, and no other injuries were reported.

Regino was wearing a seat belt, according to Fisher. There was no word if the pickup driver was wearing a seat belt in the crash, which continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through Sunday, 689 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 35 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 45 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
