Driver killed in crash on stretch of I-26 that runs through the Midlands, SC cops say

One person was killed early Sunday in a crash on a section of Interstate 26 that runs through the Midlands, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about midnight in Orangeburg County, said Cpl. Nick Pye.

A 2004 Chevrolet sedan was driving east on I-26, and at the 141 mile marker the car ran off the right side of the road, according to Pye. That’s near the line with Calhoun County, not far from the junction with U.S. 601.

The Chevy flipped over and the driver died, Pye said.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

Pye said the driver was the only person in the Chevy, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Oct. 13, at least 750 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 40 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 36 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
