Elementary school students hospitalized after bus crash in Lexington County, officials say
Multiple elementary school students were hospitalized Tuesday after the bus they were passengers on collided with a car, according to Lexington 2 officials.
The crash happened on U.S. 321 near the intersection with Woodcote Drive, officials said in a news release. That’s in the Gaston area of Lexington County.
There were 36 Wood Elementary School students on the bus that was making its afternoon route when a car hit the side of the bus, according to the release. Information about what caused the car to collide with the bus was not available, but district officials called the wreck an accident.
School and district administrators responded to the crash, along with members of Lexington County Fire and EMS, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol, according to the release.
The students’ families were notified, officials said.
Medical personnel screened both the bus driver as well as all passengers, and six students were taken to an area hospital for further medical evaluation, according to the release. Further information on those students’ conditions was not available.
The students who were medically cleared at the scene were taken by car to complete their rides home, officials said.
There was no word if any of the people involved in the crash were wearing safety restraints.
The crash will be investigated by the Highway Patrol. No arrests have been reported.
The collision happened during National School Bus Safety Week, which runs from Oct. 21-25.
