School bus carrying students involved in crash with car in Columbia, SC police say
At least one person was hospitalized early Monday morning following a collision between a car and bus transporting students to school, according to the Columbia Police Department.
The crash involved a Richland 1 school bus, police said. There were six students from Meadowfield Elementary School on the bus, Richland 1 spokeswoman Karen York told The State.
Students were assessed by EMS, according to police. No students were injured and they were taken to school on another bus, York said.
The driver of the car in the crash was taken to an area hospital, police said. Further information on that driver’s condition was not available.
The car driver was cited for disregarding a traffic control device, police said Monday afternoon.
The wreck happened at the intersection of Garners Ferry Road and Veterans Road, according to police. That’s near both the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Exit 9 on Interstate 77.
School officials were on the scene, police said. School staff members were notifying parents of the students involved, according to York.
There was no word if any of the people involved in the crash were wearing safety restraints.
Information about what caused the collision was not available.
This was at least the second crash involving a school bus in the Midlands in the past week.
On Oct. 23, a Lexington 2 school bus transporting 36 students home from Wood Elementary School collided with a car on U.S. 321 near the intersection with Woodcote Drive, district officials said. Six students were taken to an area hospital, according to Lexington 2 officials. Further information on those students’ conditions was not available.
The crash, which occurred during National School Bus Safety Week, is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
There was no word about which law enforcement agency will lead an investigation into Monday’s collision.
