Fire at waste disposal site causes busy Columbia road to close, SC fire department says

Part of a busy Richland County road was closed Sunday afternoon as crews battled a fire at a dump, according to the Columbia Fire Department.

Farrow Road was closed in both directions north of the junction with Interstate 20 at Exit 72, the fire department said at 4:05 p.m.

The 2-alarm fire was at the GFL Environmental waste disposal site at 7800 Farrow Road, according to the fire department.

Members of the fire department responded to the dump shortly before 3:15 p.m., officials said. The rapid spread of the fire prompted officers on scene to call for a second alarm — dispatching more resources, and all hands were battling the flames, according to the fire department.

Smoke could be seen in the sky above the dump, according to the fire department.

At about 5:10 p.m., the fire department said that the fire was contained, but crews remained on the scene and continued to continue to work.

There were four workers at the facility when the fire broke out but no one was hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word about how the fire started, and information about how long it was expected to take to get the blaze extinguished and the road reopened was not available.

The cause of the fire will be investigated by the Richland County Fire Marshal, and the South Carolina Department of Public Health is also being contacted because the fire happened at a waste disposal facility, officials said.

There was no word if the fire will affect trash and recycling pickup this week.
