SUV was turning and a car swerved to avoid it, leading to crash with truck, SC cops say
One person was killed Tuesday and another was hospitalized following a crash on a Richland County road that involved a car, SUV and pickup truck, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The collision happened at about 4:30 p.m. on a stretch of Garners Ferry Road in the Eastover area of Richland County, said Master Trooper William Bennett.
A 2006 Acura RSX was driving west on Garners Ferry Road, and the car driver swerved to avoid a 2020 Lincoln Navigator that was turning north onto Cate Road, according to Bennett. In an effort to miss the SUV, the car then crashed head-on into a 2021 Toyota Tundra pickup truck that was driving east on Garners Ferry Road, Bennett said.
Both the Acura and Toyota drivers were taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital, where the car driver died, according to Bennett.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Acura driver.
Further information on the pickup driver’s condition was not available.
Bennett said the SUV driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if any of the drivers involved in the crash were wearing seat belts, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 905 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 47 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 61 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
