Two people killed in crash between SUVs on South Carolina road, Highway Patrol says

Two people were killed Monday night when the SUVs they were driving crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:15 p.m. in Florence County, said Cpl. Nick Pye.

A 2011 Kia SUV was driving south on West John Paul Jones Road, according to Pye. Near the intersection with Cummings Road it collided with a 2023 Chevrolet SUV that was driving north on West John Paul Jones Road, Pye said.

The drivers of both the Kia and Chevy SUVs died, according to Pye.

The Florence County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victims.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either of the drivers was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the wreck was not available, but it continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 67 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least six people have died in Florence County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 25 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
