Motorcycle rider hits mailbox, ditch and culvert in fatal crash, SC coroner says
A South Carolina man died weeks after the motorcycle he was riding was involved in a crash, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.
Mark Carr, a 53-year-old Graniteville resident, died Sunday night while he was being treated at Wellstar MCG Health hospital in Augusta, Georgia, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release.
Carr died from injuries he suffered in April, in a single-vehicle collision in Aiken County, according to the release.
At about 12:50 a.m. on April 18, Carr was driving east on Sudlow Lake Road aboard a 2011 Kawasaki motorcycle, Ables said. Near the intersection with Mustang Drive the motorcycle ran off the right side of Sudlow Lake Road and crashed into a mailbox, a ditch, then a concrete culvert before Carr was ejected, according to the release. That’s in Burnettown, near Midland Valley High School.
Carr was taken by EMS to the hospital in Augusta where he died at 9:01 p.m. Sunday, Ables said.
Information about what caused the motorcycle to veer off the road was not available, but the crash is being investigated by the coroner’s office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
There was no word if Carr was wearing a helmet when the motorcycle crashed.
Through Sunday, 278 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least six people have died in Aiken County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 28 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
