Triplets’ mom guilty in death of infant & neglect of other kids, SC official says

A South Carolina mother is going to prison following the death of one of her triplets and the neglect of the other infants, according to the 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

On May 15, Breonte Glasgow was found guilty of homicide by child abuse for the death of her son, Johan Gantt, and two counts of unlawful neglect of a child for two of her other children, the solicitor’s office said Monday in a news release.

The 34-year-old Columbia resident was sentenced to 45 years in a South Carolina Department of Corrections prison, officials said.

The charges stem from a March 11, 2023, incident when members of the Columbia Fire Department and Richland County EMS responded to Glasgow’s home, where they found 8-month-old Johan Gantt unresponsive, according to the release. EMS workers attempted to resuscitate Johan, eventually transporting him to an area hospital where doctors were unable to save him, the solicitor’s office said.

An autopsy showed the baby suffered numerous injuries, including five broken bones, a brain injury, extreme malnourishment, and various other visible injuries, according to the release.

During an investigation, members of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department discovered that Glasgow was the sole caregiver of the children, the solicitor’s office said. In a search of her phone, law enforcement officers found a deleted video of Johan from two months earlier that showed Glasgow taunting the child in the bathtub and making crass statements regarding bodily injuries and his excessive crying, according to the release.

In a previous hearing, Glasgow testified that she discovered the child dead 2 hours before calling 911 and said that she didn’t see any injuries to her son, the solicitor’s office said.

In addition to Johan, Glasgow had two other children in the home who were severely malnourished and required medical attention, according to the release. The solicitor’s office said that those children are now happy and thriving in another placement.

Glasgow was arrested March 23, 2023, and no bond was set, Richland County court records show.

Deputy Solicitor Anna Browder, Senior Assistant Solicitor Kathryn Cavanaugh and Assistant Solicitor Morgan Monroe prosecuted the case for the solicitor’s office. Columbia attorney, a public defender, was Glasgow’s attorney, according to court records.
