Driver killed in crash that left three other people hospitalized, SC cops say
One person was killed Monday and three others were injured in a crash between a car and a truck, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The crash happened at about 1 p.m. in Richland County, said Master Trooper William Bennett.
A 2022 Kia Stinger was driving south on Monticello Road in Columbia, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with Nipper Creek Road the Kia ran off the right side of the Monticello Road before swerving back onto and across the road, where it collided with a northbound 2000 Chevrolet truck, Bennett said.
The passenger side of the Kia hit the Chevy, according to Bennett.
The Kia driver died at the scene, Bennett said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Kia driver.
There were two passengers in the Kia, and both were hurt and taken to Prisma Health Richland Hospital, according to Bennett.
The Chevy driver, who was the only person in the truck, was also hurt and taken to the same hospital, Bennett said. Further information on the surviving victims’ conditions was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.
Information about what originally caused the Kia to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through May 18, at least 291 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 19 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 52 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
