South Carolina man killed in crash that involved pickup truck, officials say
A South Carolina man was killed Wednesday when the motorcycle he was riding was involved in a crash, according to officials.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 1:35 p.m. in Cherokee County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
A 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck had stopped while driving east on Moss Crossing, and a 2016 Indian motorcycle was going south on West Cherokee Street, according to Bolt. The vehicles collided at the intersection, in the Blacksburg area near the state line separating South Carolina and North Carolina, Bolt said.
The motorcycle rider died, according to Bolt.
The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office said 77-year-old Cowpens resident Ralph Coggins Jr. was the victim who died, WYFF reported.
Bolt said the Chevy driver, who was the only person in the truck, was not hurt. No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the Chevy driver was wearing a seat belt, or if the motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet.
Information about what led to the collision was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 316 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least five people have died in Cherokee County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 20 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
