Man killed when truck runs off road in morning crash, SC coroner says

A man was killed over the weekend when the vehicle he was driving ran off a South Carolina road and crashed, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Wade Sweat III, 42, died hours after a Sunday morning wreck, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 10:15 a.m. in the 1400 block of Old Barnwell Road, according to the release. That’s in Aiken, near the intersection with Stillwater Road.

Sweat was driving a 1994 Chevrolet truck north on Old Barnwell Road when the vehicle ran off the left side of the road, the coroner’s office said. The Chevy overcorrected and swerved back across Old Barnwell Road before it ran off the right side, where it flipped over and crashed into a fence, according to the release.

EMS took Sweat to Wellstar MCG Health hospital in Augusta, Georgia, where he died at 5:45 p.m. from the injuries he suffered in the wreck, the coroner’s office said.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if Sweat was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what originally caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 331 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least eight people have died in Aiken County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 28 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
