SC woman killed when vehicle crashes with 18-wheel truck on I-77, coroner says
A South Carolina woman was killed Tuesday when the motorcycle she was driving was involved in a crash on Interstate 77, according to the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office.
Kathleen E. Hodge, a 60-year-old Darlington resident, died in what Coroner Chris Hill called an accident Wednesday in a news release.
At about 2 p.m. Tuesday, Hodge was driving a motorcycle on I-77 and lost control near the 46 mile marker, the coroner’s office said. That’s in the Winnsboro area of Fairfield County.
The motorcycle collided with an 18-wheel tractor trailer truck and Hodge died at the scene, according to the release.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if Hodge was wearing a helmet.
Information about what caused Hodge to lose control of the motorcycle was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the wreck, which caused a traffic jam as all of the southbound lanes on I-77 were temporarily blocked, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
Through Sunday, 371 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least five people have died in Fairfield County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 10 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
