Man armed with gun and machete shot by deputies during chase, SC sheriff says
Law enforcement officers shot an armed South Carolina man they were chasing Sunday, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
At about 10:30 a.m., deputies responded to a report about a burglary in progress at 821 Old Barnwell Road in Aiken, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
Deputies encountered a man who was running away, according to the release. The man was later identified as 29-year-old Aiken resident Aaron Stevenson, the sheriff’s office said.
During a chase, Stevenson “presented” both a machete and a gun, according to the sheriff’s office. In response, deputies shot Stevenson, according to the release.
Life-saving measures were initiated by the deputies and Aiken County EMS, who took Stevenson to a local hospital, the sheriff’s office said. Further information on Stevenson’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
The sheriff’s office said that Stevenson is facing first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during a violent crime charges, in addition to two counts of second-degree assault and battery, according to the release. Stevenson is not currently listed on the Aiken County Detention Center’s inmate roster.
The sheriff’s office asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate the shooting.
