Boyfriend wanted after woman was killed on her birthday, Columbia police say
A woman was killed Sunday, her 42nd birthday, and there’s a search for the man accused of shooting her, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Police said they were conducting a shooting investigation Monday morning in a news release. Hours later, police identified 36-year-old Cordera Hopkins as the wanted man.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office identified Monique Worthy as the victim, according to the release.
Worthy’s body was found by officers in a home in the 1500 block of Levity Street, police said. That’s in the area between North Main Street and Farrow Road.
Her death is considered an isolated domestic-related homicide, according to police, who said Worthy was Hopkins’ “female companion.”
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word about what led to the violent domestic dispute that continues to be investigated by police.
When he’s taken into custody, police said Hopkins will be charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Anyone who sees Hopkins, or has information about him, is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit a tip online.
In the case of an emergency, always call 911.
