South Carolina man killed after altercation between acquaintances, officials say

One person was killed Tuesday afternoon in a shooting in South Carolina, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting happened after an “altercation between acquaintances,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Cameron Pearson, a 20-year-old Sumter County resident, died from the injuries he suffered from an apparent gunshot wound, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said Wednesday.

At about 3 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to a report of a shooting near Old Manning Road in the southern part of Sumter County, according to the release.

Deputies found the victim’s body, the sheriff’s office said.

No other injuries were reported.

Although the sheriff’s office said acquaintances were involved in a fight, they have not publicly identified a shooter, or anyone else involved in the gunfire. Information about what caused the altercation was not available.

No arrests have been reported, but the shooting continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s office, which said it’s searching for suspects involved in the shooting.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 803-236-6275, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit a tip online.

In the case of an emergency, always call 911.
