Woman being held at a jail in South Carolina dies, coroner says

A woman who was being held at a jail in South Carolina died Wednesday, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Tonya Zorn, a 35-year-old Warrenville resident, is the inmate who died, Coroner Darryl Ables said Thursday in a news release.

At about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, the coroner’s office began to investigate Zorn’s death, according to the release.

Zorn was found unresponsive in her cell, then was taken by EMS to Aiken Regional Medical Centers where she was pronounced dead, the coroner’s office said.

Neither a cause nor manner of death has been announced, but an autopsy has been scheduled for next week in Newberry to help make those determinations, according to the release.

Information about why Zorn was being held at the jail was not available.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office said it asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to join the coroner’s office in leading an investigation into Zorn’s death.

But the sheriff’s office said that there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances regarding Zorn’s death.

Zorn’s previous criminal record includes arrests on two drug (methamphetamine) charges and a single count breach of trust with fraudulent intent (value $10,000 or more) that she pleaded guilty to in 2023, Aiken County court records show.
