SC woman was killed and man is arrested 100 miles away from shooting, cops say

In the days after a woman’s body was found in South Carolina, three people were arrested, including a man who was taken into custody following a hours-long standoff more than 100 miles from where the deadly shooting happened, according to Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Jerry Lenard Jones, a 41-year-old Greenville resident, was charged with murder and other crimes after a 3-hour standoff last Thursday, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The murder charge is connected to the Aug. 12 death of 37-year-old Spartanburg resident LaPorsha Farr, according to the release. Farr, who would’ve turned 38 years old on Aug. 14, was shot in the neck and killed on Durham Place Road, near the Lake Wateree area, the sheriff’s office said.

Jones, along with Benny L. Grady and William E. Mack, were at the Durham Place Road location when an argument broke out, according to the release. During an altercation, Jones pulled out a handgun and shot Farr, and then shot a second victim in the hip before leaving with Grady and Mack, the sheriff’s office said.

Information about what the Upstate residents were doing at the Midlands location was not available, and there was no word about what led to the argument.

While Farr died at the scene, the second shooting victim was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia and was listed in stable condition, according to the release. Further information about the surviving victim was not available.

Over the next two days, both Grady and Mack were taken into custody without incident and each was charged with accessory after the fact, the sheriff’s office said. Then on Thursday, members of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office and its SWAT unit arrested Jones following the standoff at his girlfriend’s home on Crosby Circle, according to the release.

Despite the three arrests, the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation into the deadly shooting is ongoing.

In addition to murder, Jones was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, for his role in the Fairfield County shooting.

Jones also was charged with resisting arrest and possession with intent to distribute marijuana and trafficking cocaine in Greenville County, according to the Upstate law enforcement agency. Additionally, Jones was charged with a probation violation, jail records show.

While bond was set at $38,500 on the combined Greenville County charges, Jones remains locked up at the Greenville County Detention Center, where he’s being held on the homicide charge from Fairfield County, according to jail records.

Information about when Jones will be extradited to Fairfield County was not available.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the U.S. Marshals Service Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force, Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office and the Greer Police Department assisted both the Fairfield and Greenville sheriff’s offices in the investigation and Jones’ arrest.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this case and I am grateful for a swift resolution to this devastating crime,” Fairfield County Sheriff Will Montgomery said in the release.

Montgomery also thanked “the brave citizens of Fairfield County who came forward to help investigators uncover the facts in this case.”
