SC teen killed when driver tried to pass a truck but crashed, officials say

One person was killed and another was injured Friday night when their vehicle crashed while attempting to pass a pickup truck, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at about 10:30 p.m. in Darlington County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

Both a 2012 Jeep Wrangler and a 2014 Ford pickup were driving west on West Old Camden Road, according to Ridgeway. Near the intersection with New Market Road the Jeep tried to pass the pickup but collided with the front portion of that vehicle, Ridgeway said. That’s about 16 miles from NASCAR’s Darlington Raceway.

The Jeep ran off the right side of West Old Camden Road where it crashed into a ditch and flipped over before smashing a utility pole, according to Ridgeway.

While the Jeep driver was injured and taken to an area hospital, a passenger in the vehicle died at the scene, Ridgeway said.

The Darlington County Coroner’s Office identified 15-year-old Annabelle Andrews as the passenger who died, WMBF reported.

Further information on the Jeep driver’s condition was not available.

Ridgeway said that the driver of the Ford pickup was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

Andrews was a student at McBee High School, where she recently started her sophomore year, WBTW reported. She was also a member of the Panthers volleyball team at McBee, which mourned her death in a post on Facebook.

“Please keep our volleyball program and the ... families in your prayers as we navigate through this impossible time. Our girls are hurting. Our community is hurting. We don’t understand why this happened or know what we are going to do from here.”

We are heartbroken to know that our Annabelle is no longer with us,” the volleyball team’s post said. “I don’t have the words to express how much we all miss her already. AB was one of the funniest people I know, someone you wanted to be around. Any time I was having a bad day, I could count on her to do something goofy and make me laugh. Annabelle, watch over all of your sisters both on off the court. We love you AB. Forever our #15.”

There was no word if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seat belt.

Information about any possible criminal charges was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Aug. 17, at least 521 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 22 people have died in Darlington County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 20 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
