Driver killed when truck runs off interstate in crash, South Carolina cops say

One person was killed Tuesday night in a crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 8:45 p.m. in Laurens County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

A 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck was driving south on Interstate 385, according to Ridgeway. At the 21 mile marker, the Chevy ran off the left side of the highway, overcorrected, then swerved back across I-385 before going off the right side of the road and crashing into a tree, Ridgeway said.

The Chevy driver died at the scene, according to Ridgeway.

The Laurens County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Chevy driver.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what originally caused the Chevy to veer off I-385 was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 626 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 15 people have died in Laurens County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 15 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
