Teenager charged with murdering another teen, who has been ID’d by SC coroner
One teenager is dead and another is locked up in a South Carolina jail following a Saturday night shooting, according to the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office.
Marvin Donnell Jones Jr., a 17-year-old Winnsboro resident, is the teen who was a gunshot victim, Fairfield County Coroner Chris Hill said Monday.
At about 11 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a report of a shooting at the Winnfield West apartment complex, the sheriff’s office said Sunday in a news release. That’s at 338 U.S. 321 Bypass in the Winnsboro area.
At the complex, deputies found a 17-year-old male, later identified as Jones, in an apartment who had been shot multiple times, according to the release. EMS responded and pronounced the teen dead, the sheriff’s office said.
An autopsy has been scheduled for this week at Newberry Pathology, according to the coroner’s office.
The sheriff’s office said it then launched an investigation that also included members of the coroner’s office as well as the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Crime Scene Unit and SLED Special Victims/Child Fatality investigators.
Investigators determined that another 17-year-old male was the suspected shooter, and after a short time he voluntarily surrendered at the sheriff’s office, according to the release.
That teen, who has not been publicly identified because of his age, was taken to the Fairfield County Detention Center, where he will be charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, the sheriff’s office said.
There was no word about a motive for the shooting, and information about any previous connection between the teens was not available.
Despite the arrest, the coroner’s office said it is continuing to investigate the deadly shooting, along with the sheriff’s office and SLED.
